A 13-year-old boy has died after a fountain collapsed during celebrations marking Spain’s World Cup victory in Salamanca province, northwestern Spain.

The incident occurred at about 00:30 local time (23:30 BST) at the Árbol Gordo fountain in Ciudad Rodrigo, where fans had gathered to celebrate Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final.

Emergency services in Castilla y León confirmed that two other young people were injured in the collapse, including a child who was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

Reports said the fountain partially collapsed after several people climbed onto the structure while celebrating Spain’s historic win.

Ciudad Rodrigo’s town hall described the incident as a tragedy, saying: “What was supposed to be a celebration for the victory in the Spanish National Football Team’s World Cup has turned into a tragedy.”

The Castilla y León emergency service said it received multiple calls about the collapse and immediately alerted local police, the Salamanca Civil Guard, firefighters and medical teams.

A mobile intensive care unit and a basic life support ambulance were deployed to the scene, while authorities later requested the presence of the Civil Guard at a local health centre to investigate the boy’s death.

The regional government also said psychological support was activated for the victim’s family.

The city council expressed sympathy for those affected, saying it “hopes for a speedy recovery of the others who have been affected by the incident.”

Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in Sunday’s World Cup final, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in extra time to secure the country’s second World Cup title after its first triumph in 2010.

The tragedy comes days after three people died from suffocation during World Cup celebrations in Mexico City, while a 30-year-old man also died after suffering an epileptic crisis during celebrations.
