A 14-year-old secondary school student identified as Mick Ayo, has committed suicide due to pressure by her mother to name the man that got her pregnant.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the incident occurred on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at Egba in Agatu local government area of Benue State.
A neighbour who identified herself as Mama Enyi told our correspondent in an interview that the late Ayo who was schooling in Otukpo returned home on Thursday with signs of pregnancy.
According to her, “The mother of Ayo who noticed signs of pregnancy on her daughter inquired to know whether she was pregnant or not. Ayo ran away from home after much pressure, and threat to take her to a clinic in the village for diagnosis.”
The source explained that the teenage girl was later found in her room to have taken a substance suspected to be Gammalin-12, and was rushed to the village clinic known as Ghana Clinic for treatment where she succumbed to the effect of the substance.
When contacted, the medical director of the clinic, Dr. Oyaje Sule, popularly known as Dr. Ghana, said that the girl was brought to the clinic on Saturday morning.
“It is true. They brought a 14-year-old girl to my clinic this morning and was suspected to have taken Gammalin when her mother pressured her to disclose who was responsible for her pregnancy.
“But when the situation was getting out of hand, I referred her to the General Hospital in Obagaji, the headquarters of Agatu local government. Unfortunately, she died on their way.
“As I am talking to you, the girl whose age was between 13 and 14 years old had been buried,” the medical doctor said.
Efforts to talk to the Spokesperson of the Benue State Police Commnad, Catherine Anene, proved abortive as her number was not connecting at the time of filling this report.
