Minister of water resources, Engr. Suleman Adamu, has said over 15 million Nigerians have benefitted from water supply intervention by the present administration in over six years.
The minister, who stated this at a media forum, themed: “Engage, Educate and Empower Nigerians on the Legacy Projects of Federal Ministry of Water Resources” in Abuja, has however called on state governments to invest more in water supply and sanitation in their various states.
“The intervention in water supply has brought about the completion of many projects with a total capacity of 386,213,690 litres/day and enabling 15.1 million population coverage within the last 6.5 years,” he said.
Adamu stated that some intervention programs like the partnership for expanding water sanitation and hygiene (PEWASH) were established to support state governments’ in their efforts towards meeting their states’ rural water requirements.
He, therefore, urged the state governments to take advantage of all the ministry’s intervention programs in ensuring effective and efficient deliverables in the water supply and sanitation Sector.
Highlighting some of the achievements of the ministry under his watch, Adamu said they have fully implemented the PEWASH programmes with total construction of 3,372 rural water supply schemes in 19 states of the federation with 5,262,189 people benefiting.
He also said that 340 rural water supply schemes have been constructed in the North-East, IDP camps and some federal institutions and establishments.
Speaking further, the minister said the clean Nigeria campaign has yielded results, explaining that 83 LGAs are now open defecation free and all states of the federation have flagged off the clean Nigeria campaign.
