The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the SERAS Africa Sustainability Awards and the management of sustainability consulting firm, TruCSR, have lauded Zenith Bank Plc on seamless leadership succession while extending congratulations to Ebenezer Onyeagwu as he concluded his tenure as CEO of the bank.

During his storied tenure, Onyeagwu led the bank with such aplomb that Zenith Bank not only became a household name in Nigeria but also a globally recognised financial brand. Under his leadership, the bank emerged as a hub for creative financial solutions and a leader in sustainability best practices.

He was recently named Banking CEO of the Year in Africa at the International Banker Awards in 2023, a feat he repeated in 2024. In 2021 and 2022, he also won back-to-back titles as The CEO of the Year at The SERAS – Africa’s biggest and most credible sustainability accolade.

Two outlets said: “It is also noteworthy that in those two years, Zenith bank also clinched the overall prize as the Most Responsible Organization in Africa at The SERAS which featured participation from leading organisations from 27 countries on the Continent. These awards highlight the global recognition of  Onyeagwu’s significant contributions to quality and standards in the banking industry.

“We salute him for his exemplary visionary leadership, tenacity, and focus, which positioned Zenith Bank as one of the leading financial institutions in Africa and the world. His dedication to excellence, ethical practices, and the tenets of responsible banking have been truly commendable. As his tenure comes to a close, we wish him the best in his future endeavours.”

While applauding the appointment of his successor, Dr. Adaora Umeoji, as group managing director/chief executive, effective June 1, 2024. This appointment resonates well and underscores Zenith Bank’s long-term commitment to promoting gender equality in senior leadership positions, as she marks a historic first as the bank’s first female head.
