Two women have died in a tragic incident that has once again raised concerns over safety, caution, and the handling of hazardous activities in the residential areas of Tabbat community, Langtang North local government area of Plateau State.

The unfortunate event occurred yesterday morning, when a man reportedly cut down a tree within the community.

According to residents, the tree fell onto overhead power lines, triggering a dangerous chain reaction that snapped and collapsed an electric pole onto the two women sitting nearby.

Eyewitnesses said the situation unfolded within seconds, leaving little or no time for escape or rescue. A resident, Innocent Gwanlne, explained that the falling tree struck the power lines, destabilising the pole and resulting in the fatal impact.

Another resident, Mrs Nanbyen Nantel, said the victims were likely electrocuted before being hit by the collapsing pole. She added that both women died instantly.

The incident has thrown the community into mourning, as sympathisers gathered at the scene in shock and grief. Many residents described the tragedy as avoidable, stressing that proper precautions could have prevented the loss of lives.

Mrs Nantel called for greater awareness of safety measures, particularly when carrying out activities such as tree felling near electricity infrastructure. She warned that ignoring basic precautions can lead to devastating consequences.

The tragedy has renewed calls for strict safety enforcement in communities, especially regarding overhead power lines, unsafe tree-cutting practices, and public awareness of electrical hazards.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement at the time of filing this report, but the residents urged immediate attention to safety education and infrastructure monitoring to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
