Team Nigeria Chef de Mission to the next week Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye has applauded the patriotism of the trio of Seun Adigun, Ngozi Onwumere and Akuoma Omeoga, for choosing to represent Nigeria, when they could have opted to represent USA or any other nation.
He said the athletes could have represent USA or any other country based on their performance during the qualifying series, and urged young Nigerian athletes to emulate their exemplary conduct.
The former director-general of the defunct National Sports Commission (NSC), who spoke to newsmen when the director of Korean Cultural Centre, Han Sungrase, presented a model of the Winter Olympic torch to the director of Elite Athletes, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mrs Tayo Oreweme in Abuja, assured that the team will do the country proud by win medals in the Games which takes place from February 9 to 25, 2018.
“This is the first time Nigeria will be represented at the Winter Olympic Games and we will be there in a special way in the sense the athletes, who will represent us at the game have opportunity to represent USA or any other country base on their performance. But they prefer to represent their fatherland, Kudos to them. And I see it as a very patriotic and something our young stars should emulate.
I was in Houston and saw them when they were preparing for the qualifiers. They are Nigerians of impeccable qualities.
Seun Adigun represented Nigeria in 2012 London Olympics in hurdle event and she is a girl with good conduct and background. They would not be a sort of embarrassment to Nigeria in PyeongChang, and for choosing to represent us show the kind of human being they are,” he said.
He added that government is proud of the team exploit and committed to their successful outing in PyeongChang.
“The Government of Nigeria is actually appreciating the efforts of the girls and they very much involve in the arrangement for their participation at the Winter Games. That was why I am appointed to lead the delegation to pyeongChang.
“Whatever I am involved in, I always want to get the best out of it. For me, anything short of medal in sport competition is not participation. I don’t go for event just to make up the number. I go for competition to win medal, laurels and the essence of competing is for you to win medals and by God grace we will do Nigerians proud in PyeongChang
