PMB Extols Gen Shagaya’s Virtues

The remains of late Sen John Shagaya, former senator representing Plateau central in the 6th Senate, has finally been laid to rest in his country home, Langtang North Local Government Council, even as President Muhammadu Buhari described him as a “true soldier and detribalised Nigerian.’’

Shagaya, who passed on in a ghastly motor accident along Langtang/Amper road on Feb 11, 2018,  was buried in his family burial ground at Kuswang, Langtang town after funeral service held at COCIN Central, Langtang North.

President Buhari, represented by Interior minister, Gen Abdulrahaman Danbazau, said the news of Shagaya’s death was sad and shocking, not only to him but the entire nation.

“General shagaya was a true soldier and detribalised Nigerian, whose interest was the welfare of his people and had successfully served as a senator.

“His people and nation will greatly miss such a great man, who had given his all for us in spite of all odds,’’ the President added.

The president prayed for the repose of his soul and for God to give the family and Plateau people, the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Danbazzau said he, as a person, had benefited from the benevolence of Shagaya, having worked under him at One Division in Enugu, where he tapped from his discipline, forthrightness and commitment that helped him to be who he is today.

According to him, “as a minister, I always reached out to him for assistance and his wise counsels.’’

Also speaking, Governor Simon Lalong, said he, as a politician, was always seeing Shagaya as a leader and mentor, who helped in the formation and rise of APC in Plateau, as well as his own emergence as governor.

Lalong said that with the great impact the late general had on Plateau and Nigeria, the state government will very soon honour him as a mark of appreciation.

He said that, as a golfer, he was able to get so close to the late general, who nurtured him in the game of golf.

The governor said he had cause to discuss the issue of the stool of Ponzi Tarok with him, but that the onus rests with the sons and daughters of Tarok and thereafter, the government will approve for installation.

He however, condoled with the family and entire Tarok nation for the great loss and prayed God to give them the fortitude to bear the loss.

Earlier during the funeral service, the officiating clergy, Rev Obed Dashan, COCIN Deputy President, cautioned people on careless living, warning that death is inevitable.

Dashan, who took his text from Genesis 5:11-24, admonished the people of Nigeria to abhor evil and corruption and draw near to God to have a place in Heaven after death.

He said that people should live with the consciousness that death could come any day, any time, always show love and live in peace with people around them irrespective of our religious, political and tribal differences.
