Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential hopeful and former minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, yesterday, said the opposition party must produce a candidate with strength of character to defeat President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.
Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), stated this when he visited the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party in Abuja to formally notify them of his presidential ambition.
The former minister, who boasted that he has the capacity to defeat Buhari in 2019, said he has more education and integrity than him.
While stating that his ambition is not a do or die affair, the presidential aspirant noted that all the aspirants for the party’s ticket have agreed to work for whoever finally emerges candidate of the party.
He said, “We must be able to come up with a candidate that has strength of character to wrestle Buhari and pin him to the ground.”
He continued, “I can match President Buhari’s integrity for integrity and I have what he does not have: I have education, I have knowledge, I have the fear of God, which he doesn’t have.
“Even if you have a good sales team, you need a good product. And I am that product. I can assure you that I am not ‘made in Taiwan’, “ he said.
He noted that only PDP can rescue Nigeria from the poor governance the country is undergoing.
“It is important to say that today Nigerians are crying, weeping and dying and they believe that the only party that can save them from malady, hunger and psychology trauma of bad governance is PDP,” he said.
On the security situation in the country, Turaki blamed Buhari government, saying that “APC has lied over the flushing and defeat of insurgents and when they relax, they are picked up in soft targets and killed by insurgents.”
He reminded government that until killers are made to face the wrath of the law, the reign of terror would not abate.
He also took a swipe at the fight against corruption by the Buhari government, describing it as selective, noting that the only convictions secured by the ruling party were those initiated by the PDP while it was in power.
Responding, national chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus, promised that NWC would ensure zero tolerance on imposition and impunity. He also assured that no moneybag could alter the stand of the party to fairness and transparency.
“When we rebranded, we put behind us impunity and imposition. At the headquarters here, it would be zero tolerance on corruption and imposition. No money bag will come here to change a decision that has been taken at the grassroots level.”
Secondus also mocked the anti-corruption campaign of the APC-led government even as it called for a stop to what he described as the persecution of perceived enemies of the Buhari government. He said the presidential villa has become the headquarters of corruption.
“You are accusing people of corruption while you are wallowing and swimming in the ocean of corruption back in the Villa,” he added.
Secondus who pledged to lead by example said, “We have warned our staff; anyone involved in corrupt act (s) will be sacked almost immediately.”
