Fear Grips Ibadan Residents Over Reprisal Cultists’ Attack



Palpable fear has gripped the residents of Apete area in Ibadan, Oyo State over rumour of planned reprisal attack by cultists to avenge the killing of a National Diploma (ND) student of the Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State, Ahmed Olamilekan.

It would be recalled that the deceased was killed on Monday by suspected cultists during a clash which lasted for three hours.

Members of his group, Students’ Forum had on Tuesday registered their displeasure over the killing with a protest at the institution.

During the protest which lasted for about three hours, academic and commercial activities at the main campus of the Polytechnic Ibadan were paralysed, while communities around were deserted.

It was the intervention of police and other security agencies that rescued the situation from turning into another bloody clash.

The gory picture of the deceased which was being circulated on social media revealed that he was slaughtered by his assailants.

Commercial and social activities in the area was almost at zero level as most of the shops including filling stations closed earlier.

There was no traffic congestion as it used to be around 8.00pm when our reporter visited the ancient community.

The few motorcycle riders that operated charged extra money as commuters were left with no option than to patronize them to get to their abodes.

Mr Adeyi Samuel, a resident who spoke with our reporter said people were afraid of reprisal attack by the cultists.

“Many have to close earlier today because nobody can predict what will happen, those cult guys are terrible set of people,” he said.

As of the time of filling this report, police patrol vehicles were sighted in some strategic locations in the community.
