The Correspondents Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abia State has elected a seven-member executive committee (Exco) to run the affairs of the group for three years.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Obinna Ibe of Pilot Newspapers emerged the Chairman, while Steve Oko, the State Correspondent of Authority Newspapers, was elected Secretary.
Ibe polled 12 votes to defeat Chidi Asonye, the Aba Correspondent of Authority Newspapers.
In his acceptance speech, Ibe, popularly called Guru, promised to run an open door and inclusive administration.
“We shall discourage quacks, who just buy pen and paper, parading themselves as journslists without undergoing the requisite training,” he said.
He also promised to adopt dialogue to resolve the frosty relationship between the chapel and Abia government.
Ibe solicited the unflinching support of members of the chapel to enable the new EXCO to succeed.
He commended the last administration, led by Emma Ugwu, the State Correspondent of Thisday Newspapers, for being able to stabilise the chapel, which was rocked by post-election crisis in 2012.
In his valedictory speech, Ugwu, who served out his second term in September, urged the new Exco membership to sustain the prevailing unity among members.
He advised the new leadership to explore new frontiers toward improving the welfare of members.
He expressed delight that the chapel emerged stonger and more united in the aftermath of the initial setback and thanked the state council for standing by him during the trying period.
The state Chairman of NUJ, Mr John Emejor, lauded the peaceful conduct of the election.
Emejor charged the new Exco to conduct its affairs with dignity and shun any acts that could bring the union to disrepute.
NAN reports that other elected officials included Jenarius Ezeru of Announcer Express Newspaper (Vice Chairman), Henrietta Ashikodi of Statesman Newspapers (Asst. Sec.), Linus Effiong of Daily Trust (Treasurer), Gospel Adiele West African Business News (Fin. Sec.) and Lawrence Nwokedi of Radio Nigeria (Auditor).
