The Nigerian Government has applauded Brazil for its outstanding and creative presentation of Yoruba culture during the just-concluded 2025 Rio Carnival, which drew 8 million tourists and generated a staggering $1.2 billion in revenue.

A statement issued by Caleb Nor, media assistant to the executive secretary of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, said Brazil’s commitment to promoting Nigerian culture is evident in the pulsating sounds of Orisa chants and Yoruba-inspired themes during the carnival, which not only captivated millions of people but also reinforced the deep-rooted historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and Brazil.

He said the federal government is ready to deepen collaborations between the two nations, especially in cultural partnerships, following Brazil’s unwavering dedication and exceptional commitment to honouring Yoruba traditions.

To support this, the government is planning high-level cultural conferences in Nigeria and Brazil designed to strengthen historical ties, foster tourism, and promote religious harmony. These gatherings will provide a space for scholars, cultural enthusiasts, and government representatives to discuss sustainable strategies for cultural preservation and global engagement.

“We are inspired by what our Brazilian brothers and sisters are doing. The Orisa tradition originates from Nigeria—all Orisa’s have their base here. It is heartwarming to see that despite being taken forcefully as slaves, our ancestors kept the flame alive, and their descendants continue to preserve and celebrate it with such grandeur. You have shown that you are truly the children of kings and queens. ‘Omo oko niyin, e kin se omo ale rara’—you are not bastards but true heirs of our heritage”.

“In further recognition of the global significance of the Orisa tradition, NICO is spearheading plans for the World Orisa Congress, a landmark event designed to welcome Orixa devotees from around the world to Nigeria annually. With an estimated 450 million adherents worldwide, the Orisa spiritual system is a global force. Nigeria seeks to position itself as the epicentre of its convergence—akin to Mecca and Jerusalem.”

“The Orisa tradition, which originated in South-West Nigeria, deserves a major pilgrimage effect, and we are working on a platform that will bring together devotees from Brazil, Cuba, Venezuela, the United States, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Argentina, Europe, and the UK. Religious freedom and tolerance are key pillars of nation-building, and we must provide a home for all who wish to connect with their divine heritage”, he said.

The NICO Boss, who also commended the Brazilian government’s progressive stance on religious tolerance and its unwavering support for cultural diversity, expresses optimism that through continued engagement, Nigeria and Brazil can forge new pathways for collaboration, ensuring that the rich Yoruba heritage continues to thrive across continents.

“We salute Brazil for its commitment to religious equality and cultural inclusivity. Your efforts in preserving and elevating Yoruba traditions inspire the world. Together, we will continue to build bridges of cultural understanding and mutual respect.”
