Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have been handed a daunting assignment at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup after being drawn in a highly competitive Group B alongside France, Hungary, and South Korea.
The official draw, held in Berlin ahead of the tournament, has set up what promises to be a fiercely contested group phase. For the reigning African champions, the path to the knockout rounds will require near-flawless execution against a blend of elite pedigree and tactical diversity.
France, currently ranked second in the world, enter the group as overwhelming favourites. The European powerhouse boasts a deep and experienced squad, featuring players competing at the highest level in both top European leagues and the WNBA. Known for their suffocating defence, efficient transition play, and composure in high-pressure situations, the French side will present a formidable opening challenge for Nigeria.
D’Tigress, ranked eighth globally, continue to command respect following their dominance on the African continent. However, translating that continental supremacy into consistent victories against top-tier global opposition remains an ongoing challenge. Under head coach Rena Wakama, the team has shown encouraging signs of tactical growth, blending athleticism with improved structure and discipline. Their resilience and fighting spirit could prove decisive if they find rhythm early in the tournament.
South Korea, ranked 15th, bring a contrasting style centred on sharp perimeter shooting and disciplined half-court execution. Hungary, sitting 19th, are equally dangerous with their physical, defence-oriented European approach. Both sides will view Nigeria as a realistic target, making every group fixture a potential decider.
D’Tigress qualified in emphatic fashion, clinching a record fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title, further cementing their status as Africa’s dominant force.
That triumph not only secured their place in Berlin but also reinforced their ambition to compete credibly on the world stage.
Elsewhere, hosts Germany headline Group A alongside Japan, Spain, and Mali, while Group C features Belgium, Australia, Puerto Rico, and Turkey. Defending champions United States lead Group D with China, the Czech Republic, and Italy.
The tournament is scheduled to run from 4 to 13 September 2026 in Berlin. For D’Tigress, the campaign represents both a stern examination and a significant opportunity to assert themselves among the global elite.
