2026 WCQ: Rohr Urges FIFA To Deduct South Africa’s Points For Fielding Ineligible Player

Benin Republic coach Gernot Rohr has urged FIFA to take appropriate action by deducting three points from South Africa for fielding an ineligible player during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

There is a potential points deduction looming over the team after Mokoena played in their 2-0 victory over Lesotho, despite being under suspension for receiving yellow cards in their previous matches against Benin and Zimbabwe.

Speaking with Reuters, Rohr expressed his expectation that FIFA would act against South Africa. “It is unusual that we lack clarity regarding the points on the log table ahead of our games this week,” he remarked.

“It is very strange. South Africa should lose three points, which should then be awarded to Lesotho. But no one understands why FIFA has not made this decision.”

Currently, Bafana lead the standings with 13 points, five ahead of Rwanda and Benin, and six ahead of Nigeria, who they will host in a crucial match in Bloemfontein next Tuesday. Lesotho holds six points, while Zimbabwe sits last with four.
