In a tournament already brimming with stunning strikes and last-gasp heroics, the first individual honor of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has found a surprising but worthy recipient.

Uzbekistan’s veteran captain and talisman, Eldor Shomurodov, has been crowned the victor of the prestigious Best Group Stage Goal award, edging out a field of spectacular contenders with a piece of audacious skill that will be replayed for decades.
The 31-year-old Istanbul Başakşehir forward secured the accolade not with a thunderous volley or a mazy dribble, but with a moment of pure, calculative genius. The goal in question occurred during Uzbekistan’s final Group H fixture against the Democratic Republic of Congo, held at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on a sweltering 27 June evening.
With the score delicately poised and qualification hanging in the balance, Shomurodov received a searching diagonal pass on the right flank. With a Congolese defender closing down his angle and the goalkeeper charging off his line to smother the opportunity, the Uzbek star had only a sliver of daylight between the near post and the keeper’s outstretched arms. Instead of blasting across goal, he employed a feather-light chip—an exquisite, looping dink that arced over the bewildered shot-stopper, kissed the inside of the far post, and nestled into the net. The audacity of the finish from such a tight angle left commentators speechless and sent the Uzbekistan bench into a frenzy.
Remarkably, Shomurodov’s triumph comes despite his nation’s premature exit from the competition. Uzbekistan, making only their second World Cup appearance, failed to progress beyond the group phase, their campaign ending in heartbreak just days after Shomurodov’s moment of magic.
Nevertheless, the individual brilliance of their captain has given the Central Asian nation a lasting souvenir from their American adventure, proving that greatness can shine even in defeat.
The global fan vote, orchestrated by FIFA on their official digital platforms, was a closely contested affair. Shomurodov commanded a decisive 36% of the public’s preference, a clear mandate from the footballing world.
Hot on his heels was Haiti’s dynamic forward Wilson Isidor, whose powerful curling strike from distance earned him a respectable 26.5% of the vote. Not far behind, Bosnian playmaker Kerim Alajbegovic clinched third place with 24.9% for his swerving, knuckleball free-kick that left the wall in tatters.
The remaining percentage was split among the other shortlisted nominees.
This vote marks only the opening chapter of a rolling fan engagement initiative orchestrated by world football’s governing body. In a statement released alongside the results, FIFA confirmed that this is the first of five sequential polls designed to crown the tournament’s ultimate goal-scoring king.
The next round of voting will open immediately following the conclusion of the Round of 32 knockout fixtures, with subsequent fan polls scheduled after the Round of 16, the quarter-finals, and the semi-finals (which will be grouped into a single combined vote).
The crescendo will arrive at the tournament’s denouement, with a final, grand ballot after the World Cup Final, allowing fans to choose the single greatest strike of the entire competition from a shortlist of period winners. For now, however, the spotlight rests firmly on Shomurodov—a player who turned a tight angle into a timeless work of art.
