The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State has stepped up efforts ahead of 2027, urging the emergence of credible and widely acceptable consensus candidates.

State Chairman, Mr Christopher Eta, made the call during the inauguration of Southern, Northern and Central leadership forums in Calabar on Tuesday.

Eta charged forum members, comprising party chairmen and secretaries, to discharge their duties with diligence, fairness and a strong sense of responsibility.

He urged them to ensure that only candidates with proven integrity and broad public appeal emerge through the selection process.

“We must produce credible consensus candidates who will enjoy wide acceptance and deliver victory for our party,” Eta said.

He stressed that electoral success would depend on candidates’ competence and credibility, urging stakeholders to set aside sectional interests and work in unity.

According to him, decisions taken at this stage would shape the political future of the state and country, requiring sincerity and commitment.

Eta also called for a review of zoning arrangements to better reflect the expectations of party members and the electorate.

He said aspirants with verifiable track records and proven electoral strength should be prioritised in the selection process.

The chairman warned against candidate imposition, noting it could alienate voters and weaken the party’s electoral prospects.

He described the forums as vital platforms for resolving differences, harmonising interests and building consensus among aspirants.

The forums will serve as liaison bodies between aspirants and stakeholders, with all aspirants required to appear for screening and consultations.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Chief Eyo Nsa and Chief Dominic Edem lead the Southern District forum.

Sen. Victor Ndoma Egba and Mr Edema Irom were named for the Central District forum.

Mr Fidelis Ugbo and Mr Peter Ojie were inaugurated as members of the Northern District forum.

Speaking for the appointees, Northern Forum Chairman, Mr Fidelis Ugbo, expressed appreciation and pledged commitment to the task.

“Our focus will be to identify credible and marketable candidates who can win elections.

“This assignment goes beyond ticket allocation; it is about securing victory for the party,” Ugbo said.

He said the initiative aimed to strengthen internal democracy, promote cohesion and build a formidable front for the 2a027 elections. (NAN)
