A top member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State, Dr Mohammed Santuraki, has called for the re-evaluation of the party’s zoning arrangement in the state.
Santuraki said zoning should not be used to prevent qualified individuals from contesting for the state’s governorship in 2027.
His admonition came amidst a viral social media clip where an unnamed APC chieftain from Niger State threatened to run for governorship in 2027 but for the prevailing zoning arrangement.
However, Santuraki described the development as a “welcome conversation” about leadership selection and democratic strengthening in the state, emphasising that while zoning and rotational arrangements have historically promoted inclusiveness, they should not prevent capable leaders from emerging.
He said, “It is important to note that zoning is neither a constitutional provision nor a legally binding framework. It is a political arrangement adopted by parties for convenience and internal balance.
“As such, it should not override the constitutional rights of any qualified citizen to aspire to public office. I would therefore suggest that this individual be encouraged to contest for governorship,” he said.
