Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has said only the people of the state would determine who will be the next governor of the state under platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2027..
The governor said his position was informed by the political lessons he had learnt and the way his emergence as governor was decided.
Governor Mohammed, who is the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, is in the final two years of his second tenure. He was elected in 2019 and reelected in 2023.
Mohammed, who featured on the British Broadcasting Corproation (BBC) Hausa, said he would avoid the glaring mistakes of his predecessors, who failed in their attempt to install an anointed successor.
“I leave that to the people of Bauchi to decide. I don’t want to be a godfather politician because that was not the way I was selected to become governor.
“I plan to assemble candidates and allow Bauchi PDP stakeholders to choose who best fits to become the next governor at the end of my tenure.
“We should be learning from others. I will not bring someone so that I will be giving him directives,” Governor Mohammed insists.
Commenting on the lingering PDP internal rift, the governor said efforts are being made to address the problem before the next general elections.
He explained that the PDP governors agreed to put aside their interests and ambitions to unite and rescue Nigeria from the current socio-economic problems affecting the people.
Governor Mohammed said PDP has not decided where its 2027 presidential candidate would come from, but assured that the party will field a candidate that would win the election.
