Ahead of the 18th May set by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for its primaries to select Senate candidates, youths in Borno South Senatorial District have begun preparations to return Senator Ali Ndume for a fifth term in the National Assembly.
The youths from the nine local government areas of Borno South, led by their coordinator Alhaji Babandi Shehu, organised a fundraising event at the weekend in Maiduguri, the state capital, where they raised over N38.5 million.
Shehu said the funds would be used to buy the APC Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the former Senate leader.
According to the party’s Schedule of Activities and Timetable for the 2027 general election, aspirants for Senate seats will pay N50 million for the forms.
Addressing journalists, Shehu said their action was prompted not only by Ndume’s contributions to the senatorial district but also by his commitment to truth and the defence of democracy.
He said, “Ndume is not just a senator; he is a nationalist.
At this stage of our political history, Nigeria needs senators like Ndume who fearlessly check the excesses of the Executive arm of government and tell the truth to power, regardless of whose ox is gored.
“So we have gathered here to collect and donate for the purchase of the required form for him, not only because he is a tested and trusted representative of Southern Borno in the Red Chamber but also because the country and democracy critically need him there,” he said
At the event, Junaid Jibril Maiva, senior legislative aide to Ndume, thanked the youths for their selfless gesture, saying they must have been impressed by Ndume’s achievements in the senatorial district.
“He has 76 people‑oriented bills to his credit; he is the main force behind the establishment of the Federal College of Education, Gwoza, the proposed Federal Medical Centre, Kwaya‑Kusar, and the Federal College of Agriculture, Shani; he also masterminded the establishment of the Nigerian Army University, Biu, and the North East Development Commission, among numerous others,” he said.
The aide also recalled houses built in Gwoza and Damboa to provide decent accommodation for internally displaced persons (IDPs). “So, to ensure continuity, these youths found it fitting to mobilise resources for Ndume’s return as a senator in the 2027 election, which will be his fifth term in the Red Chamber,” Maiva declared.
