Former Deputy Senate President Barr Ovie Omo-Agege’s hope of getting the All Progressive Congress (APC) ticket to contest the 2027 governorship polls may have been dashed.
The APC South-South stakeholders’ meeting held on Saturday in Benin City, Edo State, adopted Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State as the sole gubernatorial candidate for 2027.
The endorsement was the major highlight of the meeting, where party leaders and delegates from across the region gathered to review the political landscape and strategise for the future.
Omo Agege vehemently opposed Oborevwori’s defection to APC before now, but the party’s national executive faulted him.
In a communiqué presented at the end of the meeting, read by Chief Victor Giadom, APC national vice chairman, South South, he stated that the Governors had demonstrated remarkable leadership and performance in their respective states, making them worthy of reelection.
Governor Oborevwori, currently on official assignment with President Tinubu in Brazil, was represented at the meeting by his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme.
The motion for the adoption, moved by Prof Julius Ihonvbere and seconded by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, was unanimously adopted by all stakeholders.
With the endorsement of the president and the four governors in the region, the APC is consolidating its base and building early momentum ahead of the next electoral cycle.
This political tsunami hitting Omo Agege has finally put any speculation about his future to rest.
Since Oborevwori’s defection, Omo Agege has recoiled into his shell, which some analysts have described as political limbo.
What is not clear, however, is whether the same gesture shall be extended to Sir Monday Onyeme, the deputy governor.
Apart from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was adopted as the sole presidential candidate, the other three state governors adopted are Governor Bassey Edet of Cross River State and Governor Monday Okpebhole of Edo State. The third one is Governor Umo Bassey Eno of Akwa Ibom State.
