The traditional ruler of the Igbo community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Eze Ibe Nwosu, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee free, fair and credible elections in 2027, while calling on Igbo residents to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and vote for credible leaders.
Nwosu, a former Supervisory Councillor for Health in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), said the country needed leaders committed to improving the welfare of Nigerians and promoting national prosperity.
He also stressed the need for an electoral process free from intimidation, with outcomes acceptable to Nigerians.
The monarch made the call on Sunday during the 2026 New Yam Festival, also known as Iriji, in Abuja, where members of the Igbo community gathered to celebrate a bountiful harvest and thank God for a successful farming season.
He further advocated equity, fairness and justice in the distribution of political power and representation, urging Igbo residents to maintain peaceful relationships with their neighbours and host communities.
Nwosu also highlighted the importance of preserving Igbo cultural heritage, describing the New Yam Festival as a cherished tradition that celebrates the people’s identity and gives thanks for a fruitful farming season.
“Today, we have come to celebrate the God of harvest and showcase Igbo culture. The Igbo people are known for the Iriji culture. I therefore urge them to live in peace and harmony with their host communities,” he said.
