Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has urged residents to scrutinise the manifestos of political parties and aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning against supporting candidates without clear, realistic and people-focused programmes for the state’s development.
Makinde made the call on Sunday while speaking with journalists after a wreath-laying ceremony and memorial service in honour of his late mother, Chief (Mrs.) Abigail Omojolagbe Makinde, at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Aremo, Ibadan.
His mother died on October 15, 2020.
The governor urged residents to carefully examine the promises made by political aspirants and their parties as Oyo State prepares for another election cycle, stressing the importance of assessing their proposed programmes for the state’s development.
The memorial service marked six years since his mother’s death, providing an opportunity for the governor to reflect on her values, teachings and the close relationship they shared.
Makinde recalled her motherly affection and their strong bond, including occasional disagreements that, he said, always ended in reconciliation.
Delivering the sermon at the service, the Provost of the cathedral, Very Rev. Samuel Olawoyin, based his message on Deuteronomy 5:16 and commended the governor for consistently honouring the memory of his parents despite the demands of public office.
Olawoyin encouraged the congregation to emulate Makinde’s commitment to honouring his parents.
The cleric also commended the governor’s administration for its projects across the state’s geopolitical zones and its attention to the welfare of workers and pensioners.
He urged Makinde to remain focused on his responsibilities, sustain his efforts and trust in God amid commendations and criticisms.
Special prayers were offered for the repose of the souls of the governor’s late parents, as well as for Makinde, his siblings, his family and the peace and progress of Oyo State.
Dignitaries who accompanied the governor included the Commissioner for Lands, Akin Funmilayo Williams; Commissioner for Energy, Prof. Dahud Shangodoyin; governorship candidate of the Allied People’s Movement, Bimbo Adekanmbi; Chairman of the Pilgrims Welfare Board (Christian Wing), Bishop David Moradeyo; and Government House Chaplain, Pastor Layi Adisa.
Family members and other government officials were also present at the memorial service.
