Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, on Monday met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja as part of ongoing consultations ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi, regarded as a potential contender in the 2027 race, visited Jonathan at his Maitama residence alongside a delegation of South-East leaders. The meeting, which lasted about two hours, was held behind closed doors.
Among those in attendance were former Enugu State governor, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo; former Imo State governor, Chief Achike Udenwa; former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chief Onyema Ugochukwu; and Senators Ben Obi and Victor Umeh.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Obi said the visit was part of his consultations with former national leaders regarding his political plans, a statement by Obi’s media team, signed by Ibrahim Umar, said.
The statement further said Obi noted that the engagement was not for endorsement but for discussions and exchange of views, adding that such interactions were necessary given the country’s current situation.
“We need to consult, especially someone like him who has served the country and understands governance. At a time like this, such consultations are important,” he said.
Obi also confirmed that he is seeking the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while maintaining that his engagements with former leaders were ongoing.
He disclosed that he had earlier held similar meetings with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Head of State Ibrahim Babangida.
On the outcome of the meeting, Obi said Jonathan expressed his desire to see credible elections in the country.
“He said he wants to see free, fair, and credible elections. He also made it clear that he does not support a one-party system,” Obi stated.
He added that the former president had not endorsed his ambition.
“We are not here for endorsement. When the time comes and I emerge as a candidate, we can discuss that. For now, we are here to consult,” he said.
