More than 600 senior academics from public universities across Northern Nigeria have endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in the 2027 presidential election.

The academics, drawn from universities across the northern states, announced their support after assessing the performance of the Tinubu administration and its policies in key sectors of the economy and governance.

They, however, said their endorsement should not be interpreted as a blank cheque, urging the Federal Government to intensify efforts to address food prices, unemployment and insecurity.

The academics made their position known at an interactive session of senior academics from Northern Nigeria and selected government officials, convened by the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ibrahim Masari.

The meeting was held under the theme: “Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda: Three Years of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Achievements and the Road to 2027.”

According to the academics, they resolved to support Tinubu’s re-election bid because of what they described as the administration’s achievements since assuming office.

The endorsement has, however, drawn a reaction from the Academic Staff Union of Universities, which distanced itself from the decision of the academics.

The development comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election intensify, with groups and political actors across the country increasingly declaring their preferred candidates.

The academics said their support for Tinubu would be accompanied by continued engagement on issues affecting Nigerians, particularly the economy, education, security and social welfare.

Reports on the meeting said several senior academics participated, although at least one professor named as an attendee later denied being present or having knowledge of the gathering.
