Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said the infrastructure projects being delivered across Abuja will be a major factor in determining the support President Bola Tinubu receives from voters in the 2027 elections.
Wike stated this on Friday during an inspection of an ongoing road project in Gwagwalada, where he expressed satisfaction with the pace of work and commended the contractor, Gilmo Engineering.
The minister said the project would improve connectivity and living conditions in the densely populated communities along the corridor, while expressing confidence that it would be completed by December as scheduled.
Wike said the response of residents to the project was an indication of the importance they attach to infrastructure delivery.
“You can imagine the enthusiasm and happiness on the faces of the people. That is why we say the essence of governance is to make people happy.
“When the people are happy, those in authority are happy,” he said.
He said President Tinubu had provided significant support for the FCT’s infrastructure programme, which he said had enabled the administration to execute projects across different parts of the territory.
The minister subsequently turned to the 2027 elections, saying the projects being delivered would speak for the administration at the polls.
According to him, residents would assess the government based on what they could see and benefit from before deciding who to support.
Wike also dismissed claims that any electoral support for Tinubu in the FCT would be the product of rigging.
He argued that the delivery of projects and response to residents’ needs constituted the basis for the political support expected by the administration.
On campaign preparations, Wike said political parties still had sufficient time to organise their structures and mobilise supporters, noting that campaign activities had not yet reached the level witnessed during the 2023 election cycle.
He disclosed that he would soon inaugurate the campaign team for Tinubu in the FCT and personally lead the president’s campaign in the territory.
Wike said he would return to his duties as FCT minister after the campaign exercise.
He also reaffirmed his support for Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), while maintaining that the ongoing infrastructure projects would remain central to the administration’s development agenda in Abuja.
The minister’s comments came amid renewed construction activity across the FCT, with major road and other infrastructure projects underway in several communities.
