A 23-year-old boy identified as Jonathan Emmanuel was on Thursday evening electrocuted at a welding workshop in Ifo township of Ifo local government area of Ogun State.
Jonathan, who was a truck-driving apprentice allegedly stepped on an exposed life wire at the welding workshop where himself and his master, one Azeez Salami had gone to fix their faulty truck at the Asimolowo area of Ifo.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the deceased had joined his master, Salami to offload about 10 truck tyres’ rims meant for their truck from a mini bus, which the owner of the articulated vehicle, Olaleye Kamaldeen had brought for them at the welding workshop.
But unknowingly, the deceased rolled the rim across the exposed life wire that was already in use by the owner of the welding workshop, Oladokun Johnson, who was working on a container at his workshop.
This however, resulted in the instant electrocution of Emmanuel, who was later declared as “Brought-In-Dead” by the medical doctor on duty at the Ifo General Hospital where he was rushed to for medical attention.
spokeswoman of Ogun State Police Command, CSP Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident, stressing that the trio of Oladokun Johnson (the welder), Azeez Salami (truck driver) and Olaleye Kamaldeen, the truck owner have been arrested in connection with the tragic incident.
Odutola explained that the matter was reported at the Ifo Divisional Police Headquarters on Thursday evening around 6p.m. by the father of the deceased, Emmanuel Brown Abah.
“Following the incident, police operatives recovered the welding machine and exposed wire as exhibits. The welder, truck owner and driver have been arrested and are currently in custody as investigations continue,” the PPRO said.
The PPRO however, assured that the matter will be charged to court when operatives of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) of the Command conclude their investigations.
“The Ogun State Police Command strongly advises business owners and artisans to prioritise workplace safety measures to prevent such tragic and avoidable incidents,” the police spokesperson said.
