24 Killed, 163 Injured In Flood Incidents Across Bauchi Communities — Commissioner

Not fewer than twenty-four (24) lives were lost and 163 others injured to flooding in communities across different local government areas of Bauchi State.

An inter-ministerial committee set up by the state saddled with quantifying the monetary value of the flooding estimated that N22, 319, 480, 000 was lost to damages and losses after 80 per cent assessment so far.

The State’s Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hon. Hajara Wanka said however, that the most precious loss in the disaster was the deaths of 24 people and the 163 injured persons.

The Commissioner, in a post-State Executive Council (SEC) meeting on Monday further revealed that 11,183 livestock perished to flood devastation which also destroyed 52, 035 houses.

Hon. Hajara Wanka also disclosed that 122, 330 households were devastatingly affected by the floods which cutoff 12 major roads across the state, washed away 60 culverts and pulled down 178 electric poles.

Wanka explained that the committee is still working to ascertain more extent of the damage, especially regarding infrastructure in health and education sectors of the economy, as well as floods devastation on farmlands.

Also shedding more light on the report, a member of the committee and commissioner for budget and planning, Hon. Aminu Hammayo said that their assignment followed the decision of the National Economic Council which directed the states to compile losses due to floods this year.

Hon. Hammayo explained that based on the Monday deadline the council gave to the states for the submission of their respective reports, Bauchi has met the deadline by making its own report to the council secretary.
