A heavy rainfall has submerged over 255 houses in the Natsinta community, Jibia local government area of Katsina State.

The disaster was caused by persistent torrential rainfall for several days, rendering over 1,000 persons homeless, mostly women and children.

Although no lives were lost, several individuals sustained injuries, with some currently receiving medical treatment. The affected houses, mostly mud-brick structures, were destroyed, leaving many victims in distress and uncertainty about their shelter and sleeping arrangements.

The village head of the community, Dayebu Mai Ungwa, expressed worry over the situation, stressing that while they struggle with what to eat in a day, a sudden disaster continues to make their lives difficult.

“We have nothing to say but to thank God because He allowed all that to happen; therefore, we have no reason to question Him.

“About 250 houses were affected; we are not talking about houses that fell in today’s rain. I was just informed that an additional four houses just submerged, and I’m seeing about two houses there being destroyed.

“We are calling on the government to assist the people with roofing sheets, cement, blocks, and money to have where they can sleep for now,” he said.

The lawmaker representing the Jibiya constituency at the state assembly, Mustafa Yusuf, visited the community and expressed dismay at the extent of damages, assuring the victims that the state assembly would deliberate on the matter this week to enable the state government to assist them.
