Fresh facts have emerged that three people lost their lives in the fire outbreak that gutted the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) Building on Martins Street, Lagos Island.
Permanent secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed this in a statement, said the total number of bodies recovered so far from the rubble by the agency’s response team stood at three.
“An Adult female was extricated dead from within the collapsed structure and handed over to her husband. One decapitated adult male was extricated with severed limbs. One adult male was also extricated with his body intact.
“Total number of rescued victims as at time of writing this report is eight males rescued with various degrees of injuries and transported to hospital (including a fireman),” he said.
He added that five persons were wounded while carrying out rescue operations, saying, “they comprise three males and two females that suffered minor injuries; they were administered first aid treatments and were subsequently released at the incident scene.
“Search and Rescue efforts involving LASEMA Response Teams, NEMA, Red Cross and LASG Fire and Rescue Service are still ongoing, to locate other reportedly trapped victims in the affected building.”
