Three persons were on Monday killed while unverified number of others were injured when a trailer loaded with sacks of onions and pepper was involved in a deadly accident at Tipper Garage Junction, along the Dutse-Bwari Road in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The accident comes barely 48 hours after a previous trailer accident around the same area resulted in over 10 fatalities on Saturday evening.
An eyewitness, Ismaila Hussein, who is a clothing vendor at the junction, said, “The trailer was coming from Bwari town when its brakes failed near Usuman Dam.”
The accident occurred at approximately 11:55am, resulting in the immediate death of two occupants of the trailer and a bystander, who was mowed by a Prado Jeep that was hit by the trailer.
“I was on the phone with a customer at around 11:55am when I saw the trailer honking and descending with uncontrollable speed. That was when we realised another trailer had lost its brakes.
“Fortunately, there were no many vehicles on the road at that time, only a Prado Jeep, which the trailer hit from the back. The impact caused the Prado to collide with a Keke NAPEP and a bystander who unfortunately died on the spot; the body was removed from under the vehicle,” he narrated.
Another eyewitness, Mrs Glory Emeka, who is a Point of Sales (PoP) operator, appealed to the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, to find solution to the incessant acccidents at the junction, saying it was getting out of hands.
“We are no longer safe again as we cross this junction. We are living in fear because of trailer drivers coming from Bwari town to Dutse. The minister should come to our rescue, because we don’t know who is the next victim of the trailer,” she said.
Meanwhile, personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have taken the remains of the victims to the morgue, while the injured persons were taken to hospital for medical attention.
