The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Accord Party (AP) in Abia North senatorial district have adopted Senator Mao Ohuabunwa as their consensus candidate for the election.
The opposition parties announced their endorsement of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in Umuahia, the state capital, yesterday during a meeting with him.
The parties said they arrived at the decision after a careful assessment of all the candidates for the seat, adding that, “we discovered that the one-time leader of the House of Representatives is the most suitable.”
On behalf of his party members, the SDP chairman in Bende local government area of the state, Chief Friday Uko, said Ohuabunwa’s antecedents as a seasoned parliamentarian could not be controverted.
Mr Sunday Chimezie who spoke for the AP, reeled out some of the landmark bills sponsored by the legislator as well as his outstanding achievements which he said had put him above his colleagues.
Similarly, the NNPP chairman in Bende, Mr Chinatu Nwachukwu said they adopted Ohuabunwa because it had dawned on them that the district had been in the reverse gear since his exit from the Senate in 2019.
In his remarks a former commissioner for education in the state, Dr Paul Mba said there were obvious signs that the district would witness vote revolution in favour of the PDP candidate in the February 25 poll.
The chairman of Ohuabunwa Campaign Council in the area, who urged the people to arm themselves with their permanent voter’s cards, assured them that Ohuabunwa would not disappoint them if elected.
Ohuabunwa, who was in the Senate from 2015 to 2019, thanked them for their confidence in him, adding that his bid to return to the Red Chamber is to restore the dignity of the district.
The former chairman of the Senate Committee On Primary Health and Communicable Diseases said It was shameful that the district which produced vocal senators in the past, had suddenly declined in prominence at the National Assembly.
