The facility’s spokesperson, Mrs Hauwa Inuwa Dutse, confirmed the incident to journalists in Kano, explaining that four patients were in the ICU before the sudden power cut.

“Yes, four Patients were in the ICU when the power supply was cut. Three died, one survived,” Hauwa said.
Earlier, Mrs Dutse, in a statement released on Monday evening, highlighted that KEDCO has reconnected the Hospital to the national grid following a crucial meeting.

She said the power restoration came after discussions between AKTH’s Chief Medical Director, Professor Abdurrahman Sheshe, KEDCO’s Managing Director, Dr Abubakar Jimeta, and Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori.

According to her, following the meeting, the KEDCO Managing Director immediately directed company engineers to reconnect electricity to the medical field.

“The hospital management expressed gratitude to both the Commissioner of Police and KEDCO’s Managing Director for their swift intervention during what was described as a challenging period for the medical institution,” she stated.

While thanking the public for their patience and understanding during the power outage, she reaffirmed management’s commitment to settling all outstanding electricity bills. She assured the public that patient safety and continuity of healthcare services remain their primary concern.

Meanwhile, KEDCO, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Bala Sani, said electricity supply to AKTH has been restored following reports of disconnection allegedly causing loss of lives, adding that the hospitals is just trying to blackmail them.

He said the outage resulted from KEDCO’s attempt to separate the hospital’s main campus (connected to a priority 33kV feeder with a 22-hour daily supply) from staff residential areas.
He noted that AKTH management resisted this separation, leading to system faults.

“He noted that as of August 2025, the hospital owed N949,880,922.45 in outstanding electricity bills, with only partial monthly payments being made.

Sani further emphasised that the separation was necessary for a reliable hospital power supply and requested management cooperation to ensure uninterrupted service to this critical healthcare facility.
Sani said, “the hospital is just trying to blackmail them as the light had been restored even before the outburst”.

Sani said the incident arose from an ongoing procedure to separate the main hospital campus and health facilities from the staff residential complex.

He said, “The main campus and health facilities are connected to the top-priority 33kV Zaria Road feeder, enjoying an average of 22 hours of daily supply under Band A services.
