Official data has shown that Canada deported 366 Nigerians between January and October 2025, as immigration enforcement intensified to its highest level in more than a decade.

Figures from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) removals programme also showed that 974 Nigerians are currently listed under “removal in progress,” awaiting deportation from the country.

The statistics, last updated on November 25, 2025, indicated that Nigeria ranked ninth among the top 10 nationalities deported from Canada during the period under review, while the country placed fifth in the number of foreign nationals pending removal.

A review of the data showed that deportations of Nigerians from Canada have varied over the years.

In 2019, Canada removed 339 Nigerians, a figure that declined to 302 in 2020, 242 in 2021, and 199 in 2022.

Although Nigeria did not appear among the top 10 deported nationalities in 2023 and 2024, it returned to the list in 2025, with 366 removals recorded within 10 months.

This marked an eight per cent increase compared to the 2019 figure.

The deportations occurred as Canada intensified its immigration enforcement, with the CBSA now removing nearly 400 foreign nationals each week, the highest level recorded in more than a decade.

In the 2024–2025 fiscal year, Canada deported 18,048 individuals, at a cost of approximately $78 million.

Under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, the CBSA is legally required to remove any foreign national who is subject to an enforceable removal order.

Individuals may be found inadmissible for various reasons, including security concerns, violations of human or international rights, criminality, organised crime, health-related grounds, financial reasons, misrepresentation, and non-compliance with immigration regulations.

Failed refugee claimants account for about 83 per cent of those removed, while criminality represents roughly four per cent.

Canadian immigration law provides for three types of removal orders: departure orders, which require individuals to leave within 30 days; exclusion orders, which prevent re-entry for one to five years; and deportation orders, which permanently bar return to Canada unless special authorisation is obtained.
