After being found guilty of contravening the rules of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over the past 12 months, the scheme has handed down another punitive 12-month to four corps members in Bauchi State.

LEADERSHIP Friday gathered that the affected corps members are part of the 2021 Batch “C” Stream 1 who exited the service yesterday having satisfactorily served the nation for 12 calendar months in Bauchi State. In October 2021, NYSC in Bauchi ordered three corps members who are part of Batch “B” Stream 1 to repeat the service year for various offences.

The state NYSC coordinator, Alhaji Namadi Abubakar, spoke yesterday at the passing out parade of 2021 Batch “C” Stream 1 corps members in Bauchi.

The coordinator said 27 others were to have their service years extended by not less than three weeks for various infractions.

Abubakar said the affected corps members were sanctioned for various offences ranging from absenteeism and others during their service year, a development he condemned in strong terms.

He reiterated that the scheme had zero tolerance for truancy and would not hesitate to punish any erring corps member adding that 27 others would have their service year extended for at least three weeks for various misconducts during their service year.

“Of the 1,151 corps members who passed out, five of them would be rewarded with the State Award honour for their outstanding contribution towards uplifting the living standard of their host communities through tangible community development service (CDS) projects,” he said.

The coordinator said in line with the scheme’s mission of contributing to the development of the country, the scheme posted a high number of the corps medical personnel to the rural areas of Bauchi State for services in that sector.

He said the gesture had gone a long way in addressing the shortfall in personnel in the health sector considering the positive remarks by the host communities.

The coordinator said that the Corps medical personnel through the scheme’s Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD), had assisted thousands of citizens in rural communities across the state.

Abubakar also said in order to contribute to the educational development in the state, quite a number of corps members were posted to schools to contribute their own quota immensely through teaching.

Some of the outgoing corps members who spoke with our correspondent expressed happiness that the service year had come to end with much positivity which they were taking back home commending the service for the opportunity to explore the vastness of the country.

Others, on the other hand, expressed eagerness to go back to be reunited with their families, a few others expressed interest in staying back in Bauchi State because of what they described as the peaceful atmosphere and security in the state.
