Four persons have been confirmed dead after drowning in a blocked waterway at Zangon Kaya in Dawakin Tofa local government area of Kano State.

The victims include 25-year-old Nasirudden Tasi’u, Bashir Sani, 28 years; Yakubu Muhd, 22; and 26-year-old Usman Ubale.

Spokesperson of Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusif, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists in Kano on Saturday.

According to Yusif, the Service received an emergency call at about 1:48 p.m. from one Rabiu Yusif, who informed its Control Room about the incident.

The spokesperson said the four victims fell into a blocked waterway that had accumulated water due to the railway line construction in the area, noting that two of the deceased entered the water with the intention of swimming but got trapped.

He said the other two victims also got trapped while making attempts to rescue the others.

“Before the arrival of the fire service, the people around the area managed to pull out two victims and our rescue team pulled out the remains of two people from inside,” he revealed.
