Five people have been confirmed dead following two separate building collapses in Kano State on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

The incidents occurred at Gaida in Kumbotso Local Government Area and Kurna in Fagge Local Government Area, according to the Kano State Fire Service.

The agency’s Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said emergency responders received distress calls about the incidents at approximately 2:34 p.m. and 2:40 p.m., respectively.

At Gaida, near Salbas Filling Station, an incomplete building under construction collapsed while six workers were on site.

Two workers, Muhammad Hassan, 17, and Khalid Abubakar, 19, were rescued alive.

Four others — Sunusi Surajo, 18; Bashir Ibrahim, 20; Ibrahim Ibrahim, 25; and Abubakar, 30 — were rescued unconscious but later confirmed dead.

The victims were evacuated to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital before being handed over to Inspector Adamu Garba of the Kofar Wanbai Police Division.

The second incident occurred at Kurna, behind the Primary School in Fagge Local Government Area, where an Islamiyya school, Khadija Idris Bala, collapsed, trapping nine students.

Eight students, aged between 12 and 15, were rescued alive. They were identified as Hassana Isah, Usaina Isah, Zulaihat M. Gambo, Nawara Yahaya, Nusaiba Isah, Hasiya Munir, Khadija Isah and Hadiza Haruna.

The ninth student, 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad, was rescued unconscious but later died.

The surviving students were handed over to the school’s headmaster, Muhammad Gambo Usman.

The Fire Service said the causes of the two collapses had yet to be established, as investigations were ongoing.

The agency urged building owners, contractors and construction workers to comply with approved building standards and observe necessary safety measures, particularly during the rainy season, to reduce the risk of building collapses.
