Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru, who died on Friday, October 23, 2026, at the age of 57 after a brief illness, was a familiar face in Nigeria’s film industry, with a career spanning more than three decades.
The actor, known for his roles in films such as Rattlesnake and Blood Money, also worked as a director, producer, master of ceremonies and development communication practitioner.
As tributes continue to emerge following news of his death, here are five things to know about the late actor.
1. He Was Born In Cameroon
Duru was born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State. He completed his primary and secondary education in Cameroon before moving to Nigeria to pursue further studies.
Despite being born outside Nigeria, he built his career in Nollywood and became a recognised figure in the country’s film industry.
2. He Studied Theatre Arts At The University Of Port Harcourt
Unlike many actors who enter the industry without formal training, Duru studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, graduating in 1996.
His academic background helped lay the foundation for his acting and theatre career. He later expanded his professional interests to include development communication, earning a master’s degree in the field from Nasarawa State University.
3. His Film Career Began In The Late 1980s
Duru made his film debut in Missing Mark in 1989, although he later recalled that his first major opportunity came after completing his university education.
He rose to prominence through his portrayal of Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s 1995 film Rattlesnake, an action drama that became one of the memorable productions of early Nollywood.
He subsequently featured in films including Blood Money, Nnenda, Stigma and The Good Husband. In 2020, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.
4. He Received A United Nations Ambassador Of Peace Award
Beyond acting, Duru was recognised for his influence on young people and his involvement in humanitarian initiatives.
In 2007, he received the United Nations Ambassador of Peace Award in recognition of his positive influence on youths. He also worked with organisations involved in education, development and community welfare.
His interests extended beyond the screen, using film, communication, and the arts to address social issues.
5. He Spoke Openly About Faith And The Loss Of His Son
In August 2024, Duru suffered the loss of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, a tragedy he later discussed in an interview with Punch.
Speaking in January 2025, the actor said the experience had deepened his faith in God and changed his outlook on life.
He explained that, despite the grief, his faith had not diminished. He also described God as his primary source of strength and support.
Duru was married to Adokiye, whom he met while studying at the University of Port Harcourt. The couple married in 2003.
In the interview, he also spoke about the importance of giving his family time and effort, describing family responsibility as an essential part of his role as a husband and father.
Duru’s death marks the loss of an actor whose career spanned several generations of Nigerian filmmaking. His performances, contributions to the creative industry and commitment to mentoring young people remain part of his legacy.
