After five years of inactivity, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Kwara State chapter, has elected new executives to run its affairs.
The association had become comatose following the protracted legal tussle that followed the suspension of the local government chairmen and councillors by the state House of Assembly in 2019.
The chairmen of the Transition Implementation Committee (TIC) that replaced the suspended elected local government chairmen did not constitute ALGON during their about 5 years tenure.
However, the election of new local government chairmen in September 2024 eventually paved the way for the reconstitution of ALGON in the state.
Consequently, the chairman of Kaiama local government area, Hon. Abdullahi Abubakar has been elected as the state’s ALGON chairman.
Other officials elected alongside Abubakar are Hon. Nuhu Podo, vice chairman; Hon. Jolayemi Benjamin, secretary; Hon. Sheu Ladan, treasurer; Hon. Abdullahi Bello, financial secretary and Hadji Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf elected as public relations officer.
A statement by the public relations officer of ALGON, Hadji Yusuf said the election was overseen by all 16 local government chairmen in Kwara State who ensured a smooth and transparent process.
“The ALGON chairman, Hon. Abdulahi Abubakar, congratulated the executives and appealed for a strong synergy between members to foster a unified front, ensuring the success of the current administration.”
