The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), in collaboration with Interferry, the global ferry association, has launched a pioneering Ferry Safety Development and Mentoring Programme to transform safety standards and operational efficiency across Lagos waterways.
The initiative brings together 50 carefully selected maritime professionals, including ferry captains, deckhands, marine engineers and technicians, safety officers, compliance specialists, and fleet managers.
The participants were drawn following a rigorous intake verification process completed on March 18, 2026, ensuring only qualified candidates met the programme’s strict selection criteria.
Spanning 18 months, the programme will combine structured mentorship and technical training, delivered by leading Interferry experts and by facilitators from reputable maritime institutions, industry operators, and regulatory agencies in Nigeria.
The curriculum covers key areas such as ferry design and construction, safety management systems, maritime regulations, and preventive and predictive maintenance practices.
A hybrid learning model will be adopted, integrating self-paced online modules, virtual mentoring sessions, and monthly hands-on practical engagements.
The programme officially begins in May 2026, with its kickoff scheduled for Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the LASWA Head Office in Ikoyi, Lagos.
The event will feature programme briefings, introduction of mentors and participants, and a strategic stakeholder engagement session.
According to LASWA, the initiative reflects the Lagos State Government’s commitment to strengthening inland water transport safety, improving operational standards, and building a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting international maritime benchmarks.
