Over 50 children dubbed as street – connected children are enjoying free education – courtesy of Kwara State government.
The commissioner for Social Development, Dr Mariam Imam said the hitherto street children “are currently benefiting from the state’s tuition-free education and feeding.”
She added that “ most of these children are vulnerable and were rescued after being abandoned by their parents.”
Imam spoke in Ilorin, the state capital during the inter-ministerial press briefing organised by the State Ministry of Communications.
She stated that the children are kept at the state Child Reception Centre (CRC) where their needs were being attended to by the state government.
She explained that rescuing and supporting vulnerable and street-connected children who are often victims of poverty, family abuse, conflict or neglect, is part of the social responsibilities of the government, promising the state government’s continuing efforts on child protection and social reintegration.
Imam said that the state government has entered into a partnership agreement with Al-Sadiq Foundation to empower the vulnerable in the society, adding that the partnership aimed to provide skills acquisition and job opportunities for the vulnerable groups to enhance financial status.
