No fewer than six people have lost their lives and others were wounded in a road crash along Makurdi-Gboko Highway in Tarka local government area of Benue State.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the accident occurred on Monday and involved Toyota and Sharon buses, which collided head-on.
Speaking on the incident, the Security Secretary of Tarka local government area, Bem Agbuku, said the incident happened after Agudo area (Tugh-Tugh Sharp Bend) on Makurdi-Gboko Road.
Agbuku commended the chairman of Tarka LGA, Hon. Raphael Yenge, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other security officials for their prompt action and response, which led to the rescue of the injured victims.
Agbuku said the corpses were deposited in the mortuary while the injured ones were receiving treatment at St. Christopher Clinic in Wannune.
Confirming the accident on Tuesday, the Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Benue State, Kehinde Dahunsi, said one male child was among the six people that died, while others sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
The FRSC sector commander attributed the accident to over-speeding, “The accident actually happened yesterday Monday. From available information from my unit commander, about six people died or killed and these six people comprised of three males, two females and one male child, that makes six, and about twenty-three people were rescued unhurt.
“They are responding to treatment in the hospital now. The major cause of the road traffic crash is over-speeding. The driver was over-speeding and he lost control, thereby running to the opposite, which led to a head-on collision with the coming vehicle. And our advice to all these drivers is to stop excessive speeding, stop speeding. They should try to adhere to speed limit,” he said.
