A total of 68 inmates in Kano State have passed the 2025 National Examination Council (NECO) examinations, marking a significant milestone in the stateās correctional education efforts.
According to a statement by the spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano State Command, Musbahu Lawan, the inmates were fully sponsored by the Kano State Government under the Centre for Inmatesā Continuity Education, which aims to rehabilitate inmates through education.
Lawan explained that the success reflects the broader goals of the Correctional Service Act, 2019, which promotes the reformation and reintegration of inmates through academic and vocational training.
He quoted the Controller of the Command, Ado Inuwa, to have commended the inmates for their dedication, describing the results as a āremarkable achievementā that proves the power of second chances.
He stressed that the initiative was in line with the directive from the Controller General of Corrections, CGC Sylvester Indidi Nwakuche, who has urged correctional facilities across Nigeria to enroll inmates in educational and skills-based programmes to aid their reintegration into the society.
Chairperson of the Stateās Prerogative of Mercy, Hajiya Azumi Namadi Bebeje, congratulated the successful candidates and commended Governor Abba Yusuf for his continued support of inmate education.
Hajiya Bebeje emphasised that the governorās commitment was a reflection of his compassion and belief in human transformation.
Some of the inmates described their success as a āturning pointā in their lives, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to pursue education despite their circumstances.
