Arguably, never in the history of Nigeria has the phrase “all eyes on the judiciary’’ come alive more than in the year 2023.

This cannot be far from the fact that the judiciary plays a pivotal role in the democracy of the country, being the final arbiter in disputed election outcomes.

The judiciary is one of the arms of the three arms of a constitutional democracy that are required be independent while working in harmony with one another.

It is expected to intersect with the executive and legislature yet insulate itself from their interference by drawing a line between interpreting the law, setting the precedence by judicial pronouncement yet not making the laws.

Below are 7 events, though not exhaustive, that turned eyes on the judiciary in 2023.

1. Presidential Election Appeal: Unfolding Legal Drama

The Nigerian judiciary took center stage in 2023 with the highly anticipated Presidential Election Appeal. The Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) dismissed petitions from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, affirming President Bola Tinubu’s victory. The subsequent appeals at the Supreme Court solidified Tinubu’s election win, capturing national attention.

2. Gubernatorial and National Assembly Election Appeals

Amidst the country’s political landscape, numerous appeals from gubernatorial and national assembly elections emerged. Court decisions upheld victories for some politicians while others, like Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, awaited the Supreme Court’s final judgment, marking crucial moments in the judiciary.

3. APC Senatorial Candidacy Disputes: Legal Battles Unfold

Controversies surrounded APC senatorial candidacies, notably in Yobe North and Akwa Ibom North-West seats. Judicial rulings determined the authentic candidates, reaffirming prominent political figures’ positions after tense legal disputes.

4. Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial: High-Stakes Legal Proceedings

The legal saga involving Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), gripped the nation. The Supreme Court reversed an earlier judgment, ordering Kanu to face trial on treasonable charges, prompting widespread attention and discussions.

5. Old to New Naira Notes Transition: Supreme Court’s Directive

A significant judicial ruling regarding the transition from old to new N200, N500, and N1000 notes attracted national interest. The Supreme Court’s directive extended the coexistence of old and new notes, alleviating concerns of currency scarcity and ensuring a smoother transition period.

6. Emefiele’s Trial: Former CBN Governor Faces Legal Proceedings

The trial of former CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, on charges of procurement fraud and corruption, was another focal point in the judiciary. The case, brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), continued through the year, drawing public attention.

7. Federal High Court’s Milestone: Celebrating 50 Years of Service

The Federal High Court marked its 50th anniversary, symbolizing a milestone in Nigeria’s judicial history. The court’s growth, from its establishment to its present stature, was highlighted during special sessions and ceremonies, showcasing its evolution over five decades.

The diverse legal battles, landmark judgments, and celebratory milestones underscored the judiciary’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s democratic system throughout 2023.
