At least seven people were killed on Thursday when armed bandits attacked Sayaya community in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State, in the latest wave of violence to hit the state.

The victims, comprising six men and one woman, were reportedly killed after the attackers stormed the community in the early hours of the day.

Thousands of mourners later gathered for funeral prayers held at the residence of the chairman of Matazu Local Government Area, Hon. Shamsuddeen Muhammad Sayaya (Sarkin Yakin Matazu II), in Sha’iskawa.

The funeral prayer was led by Imam Malam Lawal and attended by the deputy chairman of Matazu Local Government Area, Hon. Abubakar Sulaiman, elected councillors, traditional leaders and residents from across the area.

The deceased were identified as Lawal Ciki Sayaya, Abdullahi Mustapha, Yalili Mairuwa, Marme Dantani, Ado Isau Maharba, Salma Tasiu and Ibrahim, popularly known as “Uncle.”

Following the prayers, the victims were buried at the Sha’iskawa cemetery amid grief and mourning by family members, friends and residents.

The attack has renewed concerns over persistent insecurity in Matazu and other parts of Katsina State, where rural communities continue to suffer recurring attacks by armed groups despite ongoing security operations.

Residents called on security agencies and government authorities to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities and end the cycle of violence that has continued to claim lives and disrupt livelihoods across the state.

Special prayers were also offered for the repose of the victims’ souls and for lasting peace and security to return to Matazu Local Government Area and Katsina State.
