Eight school children returning from an end-of-term party escaped death Thursday evening when a truck fell on the two cars they were traveling in.
The accident occurred at 4 pm in Lokongoma market along Okene/Kabba road in Lokoja, the state capital.
When our correspondent visited the scene of the accident, all eight children were rescued from the two crushed vehicles, one Mitsubishi car with registration number Abuja RSH 241 FH and one Corolla car with registration number Kogi LMA 190 AA.
The Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mrs. Folashade Ayoade Arike, who led other government officials including the state security adviser, Commander Jerry Omadara, information commissioner, Kingsley Fanwo and NSCDC corps commander, Sunday Samuel Oyedeji, arrived at the scene and coordinated the rescue operation. She expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of the truck driver adding that he would be prosecuted.
She said the children were taken to the state specialist hospital for check-up before being released to their families.
The state security adviser, Commander Jerry Omadara, also said the truck driver would not go unpunished.
“We have warned repeatedly that every container should be latched on to the back of the truck carrying them; just like the SGS has said, he will be prosecuted,” he said.
