Nine people have been killed following an outbreak of cholera in Soku community in Akuku-Toru local government area of Rivers State.
Sources in the community told journalists that there would be more fatalities if efforts are not put in place to mitigate the situation.

The sources said the outbreak was as a result of bad and contaminated drinking water.
Meanwhile, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in its interventionist effort, has reached out to the community with its rapid response medical team.
The team, which was sent through the Rivers State office of the NDDC, is comprised of medical doctors, nurses and other medical professionals.

Speaking on the development, the state representative in the board of the commission, Chief Tony Okocha, said the aggressive intervention was aimed at saving the lives of the citizens of Soku community.
The Rivers State Ministry of Health is yet to issue any official statement to confirm the unfortunate development.
Soku is an ancient repository of oil and gas exploration and exploitation, which started since 1958 after Oloibiri.

Today, the community is host to three flow stations, Soku, Ekulama I and II, the Oil Ream Development project (ORD), and the over N25 billion Soku Liquefied Natural Gas Plant.
The community came into global limelight in 2019 when the Rivers State government dragged the Bayelsa State government to court over the ownership of Soku Oil Fields.
