Telecommunications provider, 9mobile, has pledged to improve service quality and customer experience following the federal government’s approval of a 50 per cent tariff adjustment in the telecom sector.

The decision, approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), comes as a strategic response to mounting industry challenges, including inflation, soaring energy costs, and a currency devaluation exceeding 300 per cent.

The telecom industry had previously advocated for a more significant tariff increase to address operational and financial pressures. However, the 50 percent adjustment is seen as a balanced compromise that ensures affordability for consumers while providing operators with the resources to maintain and upgrade infrastructure.

Speaking on the development, 9mobile’s CEO, Obafemi Banigbe, described the adjustment as “timely and essential,” noting that it enables telecom operators to reinvest in critical infrastructure and capacity expansion.

“This decision allows us to fulfil financial commitments and reinvest in areas crucial for future growth. Without it, the industry faced a significant risk of service quality decline due to funding constraints,” Banigbe explained.

Banigbe emphasised 9mobile’s commitment to leveraging the new tariff structure to modernise its network, expand coverage in underserved regions, and enhance its digital platforms for faster and more reliable connectivity. “We are focused on delivering innovative solutions, improving customer experience, and driving Nigeria’s digital transformation,” he added.

The tariff adjustment also addresses the funding gaps created by rising operational expenses, particularly those tied to foreign currency. The new pricing model is expected to stabilise telecom operators financially, enabling sustainable investments in infrastructure and service delivery.

Reaffirming 9mobile’s dedication to the Nigerian market, Banigbe stated, “We remain committed to empowering Nigerians through enhanced connectivity and contributing to the country’s vision of becoming a leading digital economy in Africa.”

With this development, 9mobile is poised to strengthen its position as a customer-focused and quality-driven telecom provider, ensuring that millions of Nigerians stay connected and empowered in an increasingly digital world.
