In an effort to improve the academic and non-academic abilities of young minds, the Nigerian Navy, Eastern Naval Command Calabar, Cross River State, has called on school authorities in the country to initiate programmes and policies that are capable of improving the cognitive and intellectual abilities of students in post-primary schools.

Education Officer, Eastern Naval Command, Commander Jennifer Aladi Oklobia, made the call while answering questions from journalists in Akpabuyo, Akpabuyo LGA of the State, at the premises of Navy Secondary School on Saturday.

Oklobia stated that with the just concluded quiz competition and debate, participants’ intellectual/mental capacities would have gotten a boost, adding that the competition served as an avenue to bring improvement to the cognitive and mental abilities of post-secondary school students.

The academic exercises included quiz competition, debate and exhibition, held at the premises of Navy Secondary School (NNSS).

Oklobia stressed that the Navy and its schools considered the just-concluded competition as an avenue to improve on students’ cognitive and mental abilities.

In her words, Oklobia said, “The quiz competition seeks to enhance students ability in the area of public speaking, confidence and critical thinking ability.

“These are required to position their skills on science, technology, essay writing, mathematics and technology,” she said.

On the role of the annual event to Navy students, the host, Capt. Felicity Ihuoma Uchime, stated that improvement on the cognitive abilities of students remains a major pre-occupation of the Navy and its school management teams.

“It enhances their cognitive abilities. It improves their classroom work too,” Uchime stated.
