The film written and directed by Maïwenn is a biopic on the life and death of Jeanne Becu, Comtesse du Barry, one of the famous and the last mistress of King Louis XV executed by guillotine during the French Revolution on accusation of treason. Jeanne du Barry stars Maïwenn and Depp in the lead roles as du Barry and Louis XV. It is Depp’s first film post his very publicly televised defamation trial against his ex-wife and actress, Amber Heard.

Participants at the film’s premiere at Cannes erupted in applause for Depp’s performance as King Louis XV that lasted seven minutes. The actor who was surprised by the response, acknowledged the audience by waving from the balcony while Maïwenn broke down in tears dedicating the film to her significant other.

“I want to share this moment with my lover, producer, with Le Pacte. It was a production that was difficult to finance … and I want to share this moment with all my team across the theatre,” she said.

It is yet to be seen whether Depp’s success in the French festival and film space will translate to Hollywood, as he remains an ostracized figure there due to the abuse allegations that surfaced before and during the trial.
