The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State on his election as chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF).
The foundation expressed hope for his success as he takes on the leadership role during a critical time for the region.
According to a statement issued by the director general/CEO Engr Abubakar Gambo Umar, the foundation noted that the Northern region faces numerous challenges, some of which have persisted for many years, stressing that insecurity is one of the most pressing challenges, as the area has been affected by various forms of violence, including terrorism, banditry and communal clashes.
He also noted that poverty is another major challenge, with a significant portion of the population living below the poverty line, adding that the issue of out-of-school and Almajiri children also poses a considerable challenge, as it perpetuates poverty and leaves many young people without the skills and knowledge they need to succeed.Â
“The region also faces a declining economy as various challenges, including climate change and the impact of conflict, have hit the once-thriving agricultural sector.
“To overcome these challenges, the new chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum must bring together the collective efforts of all members of Northern states’ governments. This will require a collaborative approach that involves sharing of best practices, pooling of resources, and joint problem-solving.Â
“The chairman will also need to work closely with the federal government to ensure that the needs of the northern region are adequately addressed in national policies and programs.
“The chairman should consider the promotion of economic diversification and job creation, focusing on sectors with high growth potential, such as renewable energy, tourism, and technology. In addition, we appeal to the
chairman to prioritize the development of human capital in the region through investments in education, healthcare, and skills training. This will help address the issue of out-of-school and Almajiri children and provide young people with the tools they need to succeed,” the statement said.
