The Dawn Project, a collaborative environmental initiative that is focused on raising awareness and advocacy about Nigeria’s pressing environmental concern through young creative minds, has again shown its commitment to the cause by promoting climate action.

This was demonstrated at a brainstorming session organised by the group to mark the 2023 World Environment Day held recently in Lagos.

Addressing the climate crisis with its devastating negative implications for life on earth, a Dawn Project collaborator, Desmond Majekodunmi, decried the lackadaisical attitude of majority of mankind to environmental issues, emphasising the need for greater awareness and intervention as only man can save the earth.

His compelling presentation on the impact of climate change on Nigeria was accentuated with vivid photographs showing the rising sea levels and coastal erosion in Lagos, the sea incursion in the Ayetoro community of Ondo, and desertification in Northern Nigeria.

Speaking during the event which had breakout sessions with participants working in groups to seek way forward for the myriad climate problems, Dr. Pamela Ajayi of the Dawn Project explained the Dawn imperative, showing the need for urgent action towards climate change.

She charged everyone present at the event to take action by joining the fight against climate change. She emphasised the need for passionate environmentalists to work together for impactful action because of the enormous work to be done.

Pamela also revealed that, in response to the requests from schools, the annual Dawn Project Competition has extended the closing date for the submission of entries to 31st of July, 2023 to allow more students participate in the competition.

The competition has drawn in numerous entries from all parts of the country since inception in 2021 and continues to raise awareness among young Nigerians.

Prof. Akin Abayomi, an advocate for environmental and human health, who received a special Recognition Award and Commendation in appreciation of his support and service to humanity from The Dawn Project, reiterated his stand on connection between the health of the environment and that of mankind. He is known to support initiatives that promote environmental and human health.
